#4082: Genre-Hopping Music

For this New Sounds, listen to music in the gray areas between the musical classifications -from classical to jazz, rock and folk, electronica and hip-hop -  by artists who ignore the usual boundaries between genres. There’s music from French singer/harpist/composer Laura Perrudin, the Manchester group GoGo Penguin, along with music by New York composer/drummer Bobby Previte, and cellist Erik Friedlander. Plus, hear a new piece by musical polymath Jherek Bischoff.

Breton-born French harpist Laura Perrudin was raised on a steady diet of jazz, but is also classically-trained. She plays a custom-made chromatic Celtic harp and has an interest in a wide array of genres from electronic and traditional folk music, to soul and hip-hop. Perrudin’s music combines her harp (which she thinks of as both an orchestra and drum kit), loops and electronics, along with layers of her vocals. Listen to some of her settings of text by William Blake. Then, there’s music from the Manchester group GoGo Penguin, who might appear to be a standard jazz piano trio, yet they are the product of classical conservatories, with a sound as informed by electronic music and hip-hop as it is jazz and minimalism.

Hear music by drummer/composer Bobby Previte, who, on his latest record, Rhapsody, continues his series of “Terminals” pieces – those pocket concertos written for different soloists (which we premiered at a New Sounds Live concert.) Listen to one of these works, which features all of the collaborators at once - Nels Cline on guitar, John Medeski on piano, Zeena Parkins on harp, Fabian Rucker on alto saxophone, and Jen Shyu on voice, erhu, and piano. There’s also music by cellist Erik Friedlander –who is also classically-trained, but made his name in improvised music, jazz, indie rock, and has made a few solo records in the Americana style – strumming his cello like guitar. From his new record Artemesia, inspired by absinthe, hear “La Fee Vert” or “The Green Fairy,” as played by Throw A Glass, who are an all-star New York quartet of keyboardist Uri Caine, bass player Mark Helias, and drummer Ches Smith. Plus, hear the latest from composer, arranger, producer and multi- instrumentalist Jherek Bischoff  - his January 2018 release, “Reminder.”
